A Trial Run -- Faux Wainscoating

Yesterday I showed you the Vanity Roll Out Shelves in our Master Bathroom.  Well you know I couldn't just stop at one project in the master bathroom.....the more the merrier!

We also managed to tackle a faux wainscoating project.  I am in love with the elegant look of wainscoating, but I've been so nervous to start on a whole wall or room.  We thought the 28" wall opposite our bathroom vanity was the perfect place to test it out -- just to make sure we weren't biting off more than we could chew.

I got my inspiration from Amy at The Idea Room. Here is her wonderful tutorial.

Here's the before -- you may remember it from this post about our master bedroom.

I taped off the area I was going to paint (just one measly wall).  Then I cut half round with my hubby's oh-so-wonderful miter saw.  All the ends were cut at at 45 degree angle.

We used a rectangle shape of 20" x 24" for ours -- but you could measure and use whatever shape you want.  That's the beauty of doing it yourself!

I used our handy-dandy nail gun to fasten these pieces to the wall.  (NOTE:  I measured the bottom first and made sure that was level.  I then used a square to make sure all the corners were ... well, square.  Once I knew they were square I made a mark with a pencil to show where it would be -- in case I accidentally bumped or moved it while I was grabbing other tools.  Then nail away!)

Because I'm not a professional carpenter I did have to fill in the corners with some wood putty.

Paint time!  I used some leftover antique-ish white paint we had (it matched the mirror on the vanity).

For the top I wanted a clean line to offset the white from blue.  The solution?  We painted a piece of half round that was cut to the wall length BEFORE we put it up.  No taping and a nice clean line.

I air-nailed the top rail to the wall and then filled in the holes and touched it up.  Simple as that and it was up!

And I'm in love with it!  I will definitely be doing this project on a larger wall in the house -- it's so easy.

And are you ready for the best part!?!  It only cost us $6.98 for two 8' sections of half round (we have about 6 feet left over too).

A small change -- but I love it just the same.

  3. That looks fantastic!! I've been adding some wainscoting around here too and love it! Makes a huge difference. Great job! And good idea using the round instead of a chair rail. :)
